Welcome to the Grossan Institute

When you enter the Grossan Institute web page you see all manner of advice that can help you to be healthy. When you learn that hot tea, lemon and honey can clear you sinuses, that lifting up the tip of your nose can stop your snoring, or that taking papaya can open your blocked ears, then you are on the road to better health.

I admit that many of my recommendations are unusual. But, when my patient is able to do a simple exercise and stop her dizziness, instead of resorting to pills that make her drowsy, that is an accomplishment for me. Getting people well is why I went to medical school.

The first thing about healing an illness is to stop the stress and anxiety chemicals that impair normal healing. I sincerely hope that knowing you can get your answers here from a board certified ear nose and throat specialist will aid your relaxation as an aid to natural healing. But I plan to also show you relaxation techniques from my book. I invite questions. BUT never ask, “Should I have surgery?” The best question to ask is, “What should I do to get well?”

I am looking forward to hearing from you. I stress again, the more you understand how that ear, nose, and throat of yours works, and what the treatment does, the better result you will have, because that knowledge will empower you to better health.

Best wishes to all,
Murray G.

The Humming Cure of Allergy and Asthma

Anyone can hum: “oooommm”  or star spangled banner or a popular song. Did you know that you can cure 50% of your ills by humming? Look up humming in the Pri Med index. When you hum you vibrate the head. More important you vibrate mucus that is in your nose, sinuses throat and chest. Got thick postnasal drip? Humming will shake this up, break up the bonds that hold this together, and at the same time vibrate and stimulate cilia of the nose, sinuses and chest. What are cilia? These are tiny microscopic hairs that move in a synchronous manner,  to move bacteria out of your nose and chest. In the nose, they move bacteria out of the nose to the back of your throat. In health, the cilia move bacteria via a mucus layer to the back of the throat, down the throat to the stomach where they are inactivated by the stomach acid. If the mucus is thin, the cilia move better. Cilia of the Chest In the chest the cilia move in the opposite way- they move dust and bacteria out of the bronchial passage up the windpipe to the throat where you can cough it up and out or swallow it. When the cilia of the chest are working, you don’t cough or wheeze. When they fail, bacteria and dust remain in place and coughing takes over. Remember a time when you accidentally inhaled a tinny particle; you kept coughing until it came out. Your cilia couldn’t handle the large piece. Mucus Blanket If the nose or chest is totally dry, then cilia don’t function....

The Snoring Cure to Lose Weight

What is an Ear Nose and throat specialist doing writing about losing weight? The simple fact is that you CAN’T lose weight when you are snoring badly. That is because, without a good night’s sleep, in AM you are tired. Need to get the kids to school, get to work; so you take extra cookies. A snorer might be told to lose weight. With less fatty tissue in the throat, there is less snoring. and better sleep.  But because she is snoring, there is the AM fatigue and the need for energy via cookies.  The fact is, that most snorers can’t lose weight because of the fatigue of a poor night’s sleep. Worse, as the weight increases, the snoring gets worse. Remember how you do exercises to thin the fat from your tummy?  Here are exercises that do the same thing. The fancy name is oropharyngeal exercises, described by Geraldo Lorenzi-Filho, MD, PhD in June 2015 issue of Chest Magazine. And while snoring may seem like more of an annoyance than a health problem, that is simply not true. Snoring has been linked to medical conditions, including heart attack, stroke and glaucoma.   SIT-UPS FOR YOUR THROAT If your bed partner has complained of your snoring or you have unexplained daytime sleepiness, consider trying the following exercises. About half of my patients improve enough after doing these exercises (think of them as “throat sit-ups”) for five minutes three times a day for six weeks to avoid surgery or other inconvenient therapies.  such as wearing a mouth guard or using CPAP. They also awaken feeling more refreshed and reduce their...

Sleepless in DreamLand

What is the one thought or subject you must never think of when you go to sleep? Read on: Most readers here are familiar with my writing on sleep aids including: The ten cent snoring cure – taping up the dependent nasal tip The sit ups for the flabby throat The Hydro Pulse nasal irrigation to clear nasal blockage with the Throat attachment to the Hydro Pulse to shrink swollen tonsils and throat tissue The counted breathing exercises. Count breath in four and out six Suppose you have done these. Your nose is perfectly clear, your throat muscles are strong and free of fat, you can relax by counted breathing. Yet, still not sleeping. Because? All the sleep advisors speak of calming down before sleep, de-stressing. Some do this by A warm bath Watching a dull TV show Relaxing music Water fountain Aroused before Sleep? However there are some patients who are actually aroused before going to sleep. They worry about getting enough sleep. They lay in bed thinking: Will I fall asleep Why aren’t I asleep Should I try yoga for sleep Am I falling asleep? What time is it? How long have I been trying to sleep? Turns out thinking about the act of sleeping is the WORST thing you can possible do! NEVER think about falling asleep, am I falling asleep? Never use the word sleep! Best is counting sheep! Or using counted breathing. Or count your wiggling the toes. Why? Counting is non-judgemental, doesn’t arouse any anxiety. Another aid is breathing in count four and out count six. This is because when the exhalation is...

Tinnitus Therapy from The American Academy

The American Academy of Otolaryngology has established Guidelines for the Treatment of Tinnitus. These guidelines are readily available. They are clear as to how Tinnitus should be treated. Nothing in the guidelines says patients should “learn to live with it.” Unfortunately, when I speak at meetings of the American Tinnitus Association, the patients attending the meetings have often not been treated according to the American Academy Guidelines! The American Academy of Audiologists have Guidelines as to how to measure Tinnitus. These are clearly stated. Yet, only a few patients I see have had audiology evaluation based on these guidelines! This is really a mystery to me. There are guidelines for treating tonsillitis, allergic sinusitis, enlarged adenoids, and so on. These are regularly referred to by practicing physicians. None of these guidelines say that patients with these conditions should just learn to learn to live with it! If you have tinnitus, you may want to familiarize yourself with these guidelines to assist in your tinnitus therapy. My book: The Whole Person Tinnitus Relief Program is based on these Clinical Practice Guidelines and is written so that patients can read and follow these recommendations. The book is free at www.drgrossantinnitus.com These guidelines were formulated by a large group of Tinnitus specialists and are published in the medical journal: Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg. 2014 Oct;151(2 Suppl):S1-S40. doi: 10.1177/0194599814545325. Snoring? Just say “OOOMMM”

You probably already know that I recommend “ooommm” for speeding the nasal cilia. Read on to see why it also helps snoring. This is important because the latest research shows that even minor snoring can result in reflux, hypertension, stroke, and even much worse – an unhappy partner However, simple solutions work. Not only for my patients, but in a recent publications of the respected magazine Chest* the authors report good results using the identical exercises I use to make the throat muscles strong and stop the noise. I have described these in my blog – www.grossaninstitute.com- and in my article Tried Everything for Snoring published in Bottom Line Health on March 2011. However, in addition to these exercises, patients have an additional advantage in stopping snoring by adding pulsatile Nasal and Throat irrigation from the Hydro Pulse™ Throat exercises: It takes time to build and strengthen muscles by exercise and the throat is no exception. Do each exercise for three minutes. Hold the tongue on the hard palate – the roof of the mouth. Say the vowel sounds A, E, I, O, U. Push the tongue hard and make the sounds loud. Move the tongue around as you do these. The sounds should be loud. Place the tongue in front of the roof of the mouth. Then slide it all the way to the back of the roof of the mouth while pronouncing the vowels. Pronounce the vowels rapidly. Press the tongue forcefully against the hard palate. Press frequently. Press the tip of the tongue into just behind the lower incisor teeth while pushing the back of the...

Clearing Your Ears

Did you know that your ears are connected to your throat? Your middle ear is a sealed chamber containing tiny bones that transmit sounds to the nerves in your inner ear. When the pressure outside your body changes (like when you drive up a high mountain, or like when the cabin pressure in an airplane changes), a valve in your eustachian tubes opens, and the pressure is equalized. Many people reccomend swallowing or blowing while holding your nose to clear your ears if you have trouble…That’s because your sinuses are connected to your eustachian tube. When your sinuses are blocked, or irritated, your eustachian tubes can become blocked as well. This is why sinus medication can help you clear your ears. I promise this is true; it is not that I don’t know my nose from my ear! Antihistamines (Chlophenarimine, Entex, ternafdine (Seldane) )will help, and you should take these with you if you have to fly with a cold or allergies. If you have a lot of trouble clearing your ears all the time, try this: Practice! Divers LEARN to clear their ears with practice; we are simply conscious of the part of our body that opens the Eustacian tubes, like other people are conscious of their fingers. Try to clear your ears a few times every now and again by blowing gently while holding your nose. Go ahead and try the old standbys, chewing gum and holding your nose and blowing. These usually work if you keep at it. FOR THE DIVER: Same for you, only more important since failure to clear your ears could result in...
